Serpent And Dove By Shelby Mahurin

Book Review

Lou is a Witch on the run from her Coven Les Dames Blanches, Lou is now a thief trying to survive at all costs. After a stunt has gone wrong Lou finds herself married to Reid Diggory. Reid is a Chasseur. The Chasseurs serve the Church and are sworn to eliminate and kill witches whom they view as evil and unnatural.

Lou was the perfect heroine - cocky, funny and vulnerable. Lou is torn between the family she's running away from and between the world of the Chasseurs, questioning who really is her enemy. Reid is facing the same questions for himself as he learns more about Witches.

And Reid, oh Reid! As he questions everything he thought he knew about witches, I couldn't help but draw parallels to Nina and Matthias from Six of Crows. If you were a fan of that dynamic (like me!), you're in for a treat with Lou and Reid.

I would say this book is more New Adult than Young Adult, There are a few mature themes in this book but the book also has a lot of funny banter and humor. The pacing is spot-on, keeping the pages turning as you navigate through this magical world.

I also liked:
  • Ansel and Coco! Honestly, they were such great characters! Coco is Lou's best friend and she is also a witch (though of a different kind) and I loved her friendship with Lou. Ansel is a Chasseur in training and he is just so precious! He is so kind and not judgmental as you'd expect from a Chasseur. I Loved that he was a good friend to Lou and Reid
  • I loved that the book always kept me guessing, every chapter I was so nervous Reid will find out about Lou and what his reaction would be. (And trust me the reveal is very emotional!)
  • Towards the end, the plot takes unexpected twists and turns that are still swirling in my mind. I'm practically counting the days until I can dive into "Blood & Honey" to explore those mysteries further.

Overall this is a great first debut by Shelby Mahuein and if you love enemies-to-lovers trope, witches, romance, and a badass heroine you will enjoy this book.
